It’s 8:40 a.m., and society has already offended a large group of women. Nothing new. However, it is not very often that I find myself wanting to respond to the hate in the world, because I feel like my voice will just be lost in the sea of chatter. Today is different. When I logged onto Facebook this morning I saw that Delta Gamma was a trending topic. I immediately became a little nervous, because almost every time a Greek chapter makes headlines it is for something negative. That was not the case today. The “big story” was a recruitment video published by the sisters of the University of Miami chapter. I watched the video and enjoyed the part where all the women were stating where they are from, but agreeing that Delta Gamma is home. Talk about the feels.
Why does this affect me? Well, that group of women are my DG sisters. Delta Gamma is my home. Though my chapter at Wichita State University presents itself in a different manner, I share something important with all those beautiful women in this video. In 1873, when Delta Gamma was founded, I am sure that Eva, Mary, Anna were not expecting to make the headlines in 2016 for sailing the Florida coast on a yacht. Personally, I don’t know why it is in the headlines.
The thing about recruitment videos… they are all the same. I don’t know where it started, or why it started, but I am also guilty of creating videos featuring my sisters laughing and bouncing around. It’s not a big deal. It is a simple and fun way to market your chapter to potential new sisters and bond with your best friends. I bet the women at Miami had an unforgettable day while making that video.
For all you naysayers who claim that sorority women are way too into our looks and lack the brains to care about anything else, I challenge you. I challenge you to take a full load of college classes as an engineering or nursing major. I challenge you to work two jobs and pay for your dues on top of paying for rent, food, t-shirts, other chapters’ philanthropy event, and a car payment. I challenge you to volunteer 50+ hours a semester. I challenge you to have to always be aware of what you say and remember that you are representing an entire community of men and women. Now, do this all at the same time. Tell me that, we, as sorority women, are small minded and going to be the “future housewives of America.” Trust me, if we wanted to marry rich and live the easy life, we would have done so already! Why rack up a stupid amount of student loans if we are not planning anything significant for our futures?
The Greek community is inspiring. I’m sorry that the negative stories are the ones that make the news, but please, before you snap off a judgmental statement about how we are just a waste of space in the world, get to know us. We are just as human as you.
I support the video made by my sisters in Miami. They are beautiful, smart, outgoing women who continue to impact the world with the mission of ALL Delta Gammas to Do Good.
Recruitment videos are cool. Check out my favorite one that I was lucky enough to create.
